WARNING: First movie review, apologies if its crap!

A movie about an awkward nerd trying to get over an ex who shattered his heart. Sounds like a familiar story right? Well, throw in the fact he is a bassist in an indie rock band. Still sounds pretty generic huh? Now throw in the fact that to get over the ex, he has to beat 7 evil exes of this girl he has fallen in love with to win her over and allow them to live happily ever after. Oh, and did i forget to mention the exes all have some form of magic power, and so does the new girl. Yeah, still pretty generic.
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is a movie based on the comic book series of the same name by the writer and artist Brian Lee O’Malley. As you may have guessed its about a boy trying to win the heart of his new fancy while trying not to die. The Story itself many people can relate to, apart from the magic powers bit. Trying to get a new girl to forget an old one. We’ve all been there, done that, got the t-shirt several times.
The Movies main protagonist is Scott, bassist in a band, avid games player; heartbroken mess after his ex dumped him about a year before the movie is set. The story shows him progressing through the “Levels” of trying to succeed in the tasks handed to him.
The Movie itself is rather surreal. With exes who get defeated exploding into a pile of coins, pirates, Psychic Vegans and Sub-space ninjas.
It is a very “in your face” movie, condemning you to a seizure if you stare for too long. Though this is also part of the charm. Some of the music to accompany it is done by the actors themselves. Mainly “Sex-bob-ombs” part, which were written by Beck, but covered by the members of “Sex-bob-omb”.
What my deter you from watching the movie is how it all seems too cartoony and game like. This is the aim of it. You can’t have a proper Geek movie without games or super-powers not being involved.
If you enjoy playing games, Michael Cera, or Mary Elizabeth Winstead then this movie is for you. The rest of the cast are also a reason for watching it, though there are too many of them to write their names down. But don’t over look it because of what people you know have said. Give it a try. It might just surprise you.
